Shakira has been open about her political leanings and advocated social justice whenever possible. The 43-year-old singer has been known for sharing her opinion passionately and this time she penned an essay through her Pies Descalzos Foundation.
The Can't Remember to Forget You singer wrote an open-ed addressing 545 children who went missing for Time magazine. She mentioned the parents who got separated from their little ones at the border. In the last couple of months, the singer had lent her support to drive young people towards the voting booths and has frequently been sharing social media issues that is important to her.
Shakira shared the powerful essay on Oct. 30 in which she admitted how dangerous silence could be. She initiated the message by calling herself a New Yorker's daughter, who took birth to Lebanese immigrants during the great depression in the 1930s.
She mentioned the time when immigrants entered the United States and thanked the government for letting them create their strong foundation before settling in Colombia, where Shakira was born and brought up.
She further appreciated the South American region, where she grew up and called the place the most diverse and beautiful part of the world. However, she noted that there is a lack of social justice and is filled with inequality, which needs to be fixed.
Although she said, America looks different comparatively because it allows everyone to have equal opportunity and limitless aspirations. She called out the immigration policies being changed for immigrants as the nation was built strong with immigrants' help.
She said that the current immigration policies are "unimaginably cruel," and nothing can justify keeping families and children away from one another. Moreover, she noted that these policies don’t show any intention to reunite those families.
She said there are 545 kids in "the land of the free" who are stuck in "no man's land." She said these children have to sleep without anyone assuring them that they are out of danger or anyone hugging them.
She also mentioned that sixty children among all these children were below five years of age when they got separated from their families. The mother of two said that her youngest kid is 5-year-old Sasha, and she could feel the pain when her little one skins his knee.
She revealed how much comfort Sasha needs to give him, but who will answer the cry of those little kids left alone without parents. She further said that such policies are nothing but cruelty.
