Fears over the declining health of Queen Elizabeth II has opened up the dialogue about the looming coronation of the longest heir apparent in the history of the British Monarchy, Prince Charles.
But many disagree with the choice, especially Graham Smith, CEO of ‘The Republic.’ The Republic is famously known to advocate the dismissal of the Queen as the head of state. Instead, an elected and democratic one should be instated.
Mr. Smith explains with Express UK that the people have spoken regarding who they want as the next monarch.
The Republic CEO has revealed that the Monarchy will not be abolished anytime soon, but the British Parliament's capability to call on an election regarding the next head-of-state is possible.
According to Mr. Smith, a majority of the British population do not want Prince Charles to take over as monarch, revealing a number of polls done by tabloids in backing his claims.
In a poll commissioned for The Sun 2017, it showed that over 51% of British citizens want Prince William to be the next monarch, 22% showed their allegiance to the heir apparent and another 11% wanted Prince Harry.
"I think we need to move away from people sitting back as spectators being told who their Head of State is going to be. We need to have a choice, it is clear people want to have a choice,” Mr. Smith said.
He continued on by saying that the public no longer cares about the Royal family's principles and purpose. Instead, people want the showbiz side of the firm claiming that people can’t be damned anymore if the crown is inherited.
Mr. Smith also cited a more recent poll by The Independent in 2019 where 46% want Prince Charles to abdicate upon being crown to give the throne to Prince William instead.
Currently the issue of the matter as to who becomes the next monarch of the royal family has not been discussed by the Buckingham Palace to the public.
But rumors of the declining health of both Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have been circulating heavily.
Prince Charles, the heir apparent has been preparing for his role in the last 30 years but he has been unpopular amongst the British Citizen since his divorce from Princess Diana.
The Republic’s call for an election for the next head-of-state is a matter that has been taken seriously by the British Parliament.
