Queen Elizabeth and Camilla Parker Bowles recently made headlines amid claims that the former humiliated the latter due to a decision that she recently made.
According to Globe, the queen has decided to downgrade Camilla’s title from queen consort to princess consort when Prince Charles ascends the throne.
The tabloid was unable to provide a reason why the Queen, allegedly, had a sudden change of heart. But they claimed that Camilla is enraged. In fact, the Duchess of Cornwall, allegedly, asked Prince Charles to talk to the queen to convince her to revoke her decision.
However, the tabloid’s claims don’t make much sense because there haven’t been any changes recently when it comes to Camilla’s future royal title. Clarence House previously said that Prince Charles’ wife will be styled as a princess consort when he ascends the throne.
Gossip Cop also debunked the tabloid’s claims by saying that since there was no change in Camilla’s future royal title, there isn’t any demotion either.
The rumor-debunking site also said that Camilla will be known as a princess consort because she’s the second wife of Prince Charles. And since she’s not the biological mother of the future king, Prince William, she cannot be styled as queen consort.
Gossip Cop also explained the deep history attached to the royal title princess consort. Grace Kelly of Monaco was styled as a princess consort. And Prince Albert’s wife, Queen Victoria also became known as a princess consort after his demise.
The term is, reportedly, used when two people from an unequal social rank decide to tie the knot. However, having two different social ranks doesn’t necessarily equate to a demotion.
According to Slate, Camilla will be known as a princess consort to avoid a PR crisis. Columnist Daniel Engber said that the title was specially created for Camilla because crowning her as queen or queen consort may cause problems to the royal family.
Even though Prince Charles’ wife has gained a huge following and support in recent years, a marriage between divorces like what the couple has is still considered taboo to this day.
Camilla is still somehow unpopular because regardless of what she’s done for the monarchy, she’s still one of the reasons why Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage ended in 1997.
As of late, it is still unclear if Prince Charles will change the rules for his wife when he ascends the throne.
