Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to relieve their 17-month-old son Archie Harrison from any royal title set a new precedent for the future children of the royal family.
The royal pair living as private citizens in America has made sure that their son will be exempted from titles given to the royals.
Royal experts believe that their actions have created a standard for the next generation of royals.
Princess Anne, who was the first royal to remove titles from her children, set the pendulum for the other royals. She was followed by her younger brother Prince Edward.
Archie Harrison was supposedly going to take the title Earl of Dumbarton upon his birth but both Harry and Meghan opted not to do so.
This does not completely erase Archie Harrison’s right to a title. Royal experts explained that when Archie comes of age, he can decide to carry one or not.
There is also the issue of him taking the title ‘Prince’ once his grandfather accedes the throne.
The royal tot will be given the title Prince once his rank rises. Right now, Archie sits on the 7th-in-line to the throne title, but once Prince Charles becomes King, the royal tot, including his parents, will have no say in his new title.
Although this can be changed if the reigning monarch writes it out, there is no possibility that Queen Elizabeth will denounce Archie’s rank in the coming years. Prince Charles will be the only hope for the 17-month-old royal.
Several reasons have been cited for Harry and Meghan denouncing the title of Earl for Archie. It is a well-known fact that having a royal title creates a massive box for the royals carrying it.
Princess Anne’s decision not to give Zara Tindall and Peter Philips gave them freedom in choosing a career, one outside the royal firm.
Prince Edward has the same issue with his children. Rather than letting the Queen give them the HRH title, he allowed them to inherit his title instead.
"This has been seen in her brother, the Earl of Wessex and Forfar, rejecting the HRH prefix for his children and instead, having his son use his courtesy title Viscount Severn rather than prince,” Constitutional expert Iain MacMarthanne told Express UK.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became extremely vigilant with keeping their son’s life in private. Their new life in California has given them that choice.
