In Philadelphia, Barack Obama's Wednesday campaign speech was highly inspiring as the former President made an appearance for his first full-fledged drive-in rally event for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris. He was a sharp-tongued critic of Donald Trump's character, leadership style, and his taxes.
During his 30 minute speech at Lincoln Financial Field, Obama asked the attendees to think about what America can be if they treat each other with respect and dignity and the officials they elect to behave responsibly. He urged Americans to believe in Biden and Harris's abilities to lead the country out of these dark times and rebuild it back better.
Obama didn't shy away from attacking Trump early in his speech over recently surfaced reports from The New York Times that suggest he has an unreported bank account in China. Taking jabs at his successor, Obama pointed out that Trump continues to do business with China because he has a previously undisclosed Chinese bank account, asking how that is even possible.
He went on to ask the attendees to imagine if he had a secret Chinese bank account when he was running for the presidential election. This remark was especially important because the Trump campaign has been slamming Biden for months for being overly sympathetic to China. Its recent attempt to show the former vice president as financial entangled with companies in China, without providing evidence of any financial relationships.
While Trump blames China for the coronavirus, his predecessor laid responsibility squarely on his shoulders for the country's outsized death rates, which is one of the highest in the developed world. During their reelection bids, presidents usually ask if the country is better off than it was four years ago, Obama said, noting that four years people would be tailgating at the Lincoln Fields, rather than watching his speech from their cars.
He was alluding to the drive-in rally that has become a Biden campaign's trademark due to the still-raging coronavirus pandemic. However, the president doesn't seem to mind holding large, open-air campaign rallies that comprise thousands of people with negligible safety precautions, CNBC reported.
Obama went on to say the billionaires who got Trump's tax cuts are the only people who are better off than they were back in 2016. He also criticized the POTUS for paying just $750 a year in personal income tax for several years.
