It’s been almost two decades since the first Legally Blonde movie came out, but the appeal of the movie has remained strong throughout the years. Now, lead actress Reese Witherspoon is surprising fans with the announcement of a cast reunion.
Deadline reports that the 44-year-old actress made the announcement on her Instagram account. The video shows a few short clips from the original movie, an excited Witherspoon, as well as most of the cast on a Zoom call.
The reunion will be held online and premiere on Witherspoon’s YouTube channel, Hello Sunshine. Scheduled at 6:15 PM ET/3:15 PM PT, the reunion is for charity and is meant to benefit the World Central Kitchen.
Metro shared other details of the reunion, such as the fact that it will be hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Finerman. Main cast members Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair, and Luke Wilson are also participating.
Other cast members taking part in the reunion include Holland Taylor, Ali Larter, Jessica Cauffiel, Matthew Davis, and Alanna Ubach.
Witherspoon also shared her excitement about the reunion on her Twitter account, sharing that they laughed and cried and teased that the cast may have done the bend and snap, a move made famous by the first Legally Blonde movie.
Legally Blonde was a blockbuster hit back in 2001, managing to earn $141 million worldwide on a far smaller budget of $18 million. It earned two Golden Globe nominations -- one for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Witherspoon.
It also spawned a sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, which earned $125 million worldwide. A third Legally Blonde movie is in the works and is being written by Mindy Kaling.
This Legally Blonde reunion is also Witherspoon’s latest charity drive after she offered free dresses for teachers back in April of this year. The giveaway was done through Draper James, Witherspoon’s own clothing label.
Similarly announced on Instagram, the contest asked teachers to fill out a form if they wanted to get a free dress. The form was left open until supplies ran out.
At the time, Witherspoon said the giveaway was spurred by Witherspoon’s observations of people helping out and stepping up in the early days of the global coronavirus pandemic in the United States. The actress also praised how quickly teachers were adapting to new technology so that schooling could continue for children.
Aside from Witherspoon, other celebrities have also stepped up with regards to the COVID-19 battle, such as country superstar Dolly Parton who donated $1 million for COVID-19 vaccine research.
