After a prolonged absence from the public eye punctuated by sporadic appearances on social media, it looks like Grammy-winning singer Adele is getting back into the public spotlight.
Variety reports that the critically-acclaimed singer will be the host for the Oct. 24 episode of the long-running comedy sketch show, Saturday Night Live. The show made the announcement over the weekend, also revealing H.E.R., another Grammy winner, as the musical guest.
The publication also took note of Adele’s excited reaction to the news. Posting the announcement on her Instagram account, Adele revealed that she was both excited and terrified of hosting the show.
Adele also revealed that she had always thought about taking on hosting duties but said that the timing had never been right. However, she cited the unreliability of 2020 so far as the main reason for her diving headfirst and hoping for the best.
The singer also sang the praises of H.E.R., who she says is someone she loves “SO much.” She said she would probably “melt into a flaming hot mess” during H.E.R.’s performance.
Deadline notes that this will be the third time that Adele will be participating in an episode of Saturday Night Live. Back on Oct. 18, 2008, Adele was a musical guest for the show. She returned as a musical guest on Nov. 21, 2015.
Adele is the fourth host for the five shows leading up to the Nov. 3 election in the United States. Comedian Chris Rock hosted the first episode of this latest season of Saturday Night Live. Bill Burr hosted the second episode of the season, while Issa Rae hosted the show over the weekend.
Before the social media buzz generated by the announcement of her Saturday Night Live hosting duties, Adele was in the news for the backlash she suffered because of accusations of cultural appropriation after she posted a picture of herself on Instagram sporting a traditional African hairstyle.
Adele was also in the headlines back in May of this year after netizens were duped by a manipulated photo showing the singer with a shaved head. Reactions ranged from exclamations of “ADELE?!!!!” to declarations that Adele’s new album would send people to therapy.
The viral image was actually created by a Scottish digital artist who had previously posted a bald edit of Timothee Chalamet, a Queen Elizabeth edit titled “Elizabeth McQueen,” and former President Barack Obama edited to look like he had a leopard dye job.
