Touted as an unconventional couple, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have raised their children in a considerably unconventional way, ensuring they continue to develop and grow despite constantly being in the spotlight. Opening up about receiving the worst punishment from her parents, Willow Smith made an unexpected revelation.
After the Red Table Talk episode came to an end, each family member answered a fan question, with Willow being asked about her thoughts on parents punishing their children. “Is punishment a necessary part of parenting?” one fan asked.
Willow offered an interesting perspective on the kind of punishment that she felt was the most difficult or her due to the respect she has for her parents. “OK, for me, disappointment is punishment,” she revealed.
The 19-year-old singer went on to explain, saying she respects her parents so much that disappointment feels like a knife in her heart. Willow noted that she wants to be a person that her parents are proud of and want to look at.
The Men In Black actor once revealed that he and Jada do not punish their kids, Jaden and Willow, noting that they generally do not believe in punishment. Since Jaden was 5 or 6 years old, Will and Jada would sit him down and ask him to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life, the 52-year-old actor told DailyMail.
During a 2018 episode of Red Table Talk, Jada talked with Willow and Jaden, giving fans a glimpse of what's it is like to raise kids when they are a famous family. Jada revealed that Jaden wanted to move out when he was 15 years old, a request she described as "one of the most heartbreaking moments" of her life, but she wasn't shocked by her son's request.
Noting that she realizes that every kid needs something different, Jada recalled the moment her 15-year-old son said he wanted to move out. She said Jaden got to a point where he told her that he needs to leave here to live his life. Although she was devastated, Jada felt her son was right, and he was 15, and it was time for him to leave the house.
Jada’s mother, Adrienne, however, said she would have never agreed to that. Jada explained that she understood why Jaden wanted to take that independent step. When he was still a kid, she told Will that they would be lucky if they could keep him in the house until he was 16.
She said Jaden was mature. He was making films and was able to manage his own life. Aside from that, she said she realized that the sooner she let him go, the faster he would come back.
