Prince William and Kate Middleton didn’t immediately announce that they were expecting their first child shortly after they tied the knot.
Royal historian Robert Lacey said that it is normal for royal couples to announce a pregnancy one year after their wedding. However, Prince William and Middleton waited until after Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee because they didn’t want to upstage her.
“The Queen and Diana had their first child within a year. We wondered why they were waiting and now it's clear They didn't want to upstage the Queen's jubilee,” he said.
Lacey also previously revealed how Prince William will be different from Prince Philip and Prince Charles as a dad. During an interview on Good Morning America, he said that Middleton’s pregnancy will be very open and ordinary.
“Already the details of what's happening to Kate are not being hidden as would have been the case in the past. And we're seeing the concern of a very modern husband going to see her in [the] hospital every day. When Charles was born, Prince Philip played squash here at the palace. When Prince William was born, Prince Charles went off and played polo. I think we're getting to see the first royal birth where the father himself is present at the birth and sees his new child come into the world,” he said.
Royal author Ingrid Seward also weighed in on Middleton’s pregnancy and said that the royal family seemed reluctant to share the news to the world back then.
“Well, they didn't want to let it out because she's still probably about the 10-week mark but they knew that once Kate was seen going into the hospital… that it was going to be out of their hands and then the media would have control of the announcement,” she said.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Middleton welcomed their first child, Prince George in 2013. They were blessed with a daughter, Princess Charlotte in 2015, and they welcomed Prince Louis in 2018.
Following Prince Louis’s birth, there have been rumors that Prince William and Middleton will have another child, and it’s only a matter of time before they make an announcement. But two years have passed and Middleton still hasn’t gotten pregnant.
Some bookmakers are convinced that it’s only a matter of time before Prince William and Middleton that they are expecting baby number four in 2021.
