Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently faced backlash after they seemingly tried to convince American voters to not support Donald Trump.
According to Express, the statements that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made were done on a personal capacity. However, the palace still made sure to distance themselves from the couple’s political statements.
“The duke is not a working member of the royal family and any comments he makes are made in a personal capacity,” a palace insider said.
In his recent speech, Prince Harry said that it’s vital that Americans reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity. While the Duke of Sussex didn’t mention Trump’s name, the POTUS is known for doing all three.
“When the bad outweighs the good, for many, whether we realize it or not, it erodes our ability to have compassion and our ability to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Because when one person buys into negativity online, the effects are felt exponentially. It’s time to not only reflect but act,” he said.
Markle stressed that the upcoming elections is the most important election of their lifetime.
“When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter because you do, and you deserve to be heard,” she said.
Royal commentator Phil Dampier analyzed Prince Harry and Markle’s recent statement by saying that they crossed a line. And because of this, there’s no way that the Sussexes could ever return to the United Kingdom as working members of the royal family.
“Although they didn’t mention Joe Biden by name, we all know that the couple is not fans of Donald Trump. Their political leanings aren’t in doubt, but now is the time for them to give up their royal titles. Their future is clearly now in the States and if they are going to get involved in politics, they should no longer be able to call themselves the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” he said.
Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan also slammed Prince Harry and Markle following their recent call to action.
“Prince Harry poking his ‘woke’ nose into the US election and effectively telling Americans to vote against President Trump is completely unacceptable behavior for a member of the royal family,” Morgan tweeted.
But a source close to Prince Harry clarified that he wasn’t talking about any candidate. Rather, he was talking about the tone of the debate in the run-up to the election.
