Prince Charles has, allegedly, been asked to stop commenting on the issue of climate change when he becomes king.
Earlier this week, Prince Charles seemingly defied Queen Elizabeth’s orders with his latest message on the controversial topic.
“Without swift and immediate action, at an unprecedented pace and scale, we will miss the window of opportunity to ‘reset’ for a more sustainable and inclusive future. The environmental crisis has been with us for far too many years – decried, denigrated, and denied. It is now becoming a comprehensive catastrophe that will dwarf the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The global pandemic is a wake-up call we simply cannot afford to ignore,” Prince Charles said.
Clarence House shared the video of Prince Charles talking about climate change via their official Instagram account.
“The Prince of Wales has delivered a virtual keynote speech to launch the start of Climate Week NYC. Run in coordination with the @UN, Climate Week brings together international figures from the private, public, and philanthropic sectors to discuss climate action,” they captioned the video.
In July, Prince Charles was criticized for continuously talking about climate change. He’s also been forced to give up his activism when he ascends the throne.
While speaking with Express, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said that Prince Charles may face some resistance from The Firm if he continues with his efforts to promote climate change.
“The Prince began his campaign years ago, he's been campaigning for over half a century on the environment. But remember it isn't a party political issue, it is something that almost all governments in the world now support. That is the reduction of carbon emissions. So, the Prince wouldn't be straying into the controversial territory by mentioning it,” he said.
Prince Charles and the other members of the royal family have also been discouraged from talking about politics and religion.
According to the University College London’s Constitution Unit at its School of Public Policy, Prince Charles has been trying to promote unity among the different religions in the United Kingdom.
“Charles was making the point that in a country with many religions now present, the sovereign should be concerned to see all religion defended and not just the Church of England. Because Latin has no definite article, he offered ‘Defender of Faith’ as an alternative and viable translation to signify how a sovereign should nowadays understand the contemporary meaning of the title. In practice, religion is protected by laws made by Parliament or as a result of international agreements like the European Convention on Human Rights,” they said.
