Jimmy Kimmel and Jennifer Aniston presented the first winner’s trophy at the 72nd Emmy Awards but set fire to the envelope of the winner.
The duo did not take any risks with the COVID-19 pandemic while giving away the first award to the winner at the 72nd Emmy Awards. The Emmys are different this year being the first virtual award ceremony ever.
However, Kimmel was hosting the function from Los Angeles’ Staples Center where the auditorium was empty. The nominees in different categories were eagerly waiting at their respective homes to know whether they bagged an award or not.
Jimmy Kimmel was accompanied on the stage by Friends alum Jennifer Aniston for the announcement of the first award of the night. The duo shares a close friendship and did not want to take any kind of chance while declaring the name of Catherine O’ Hara as the winner in the category of the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.
She won it for her character in the TV series Schitt's Creek. Additional precautions were a must and they decided to sanitize the envelope containing the name of the winner. They sprayed Lysol and set fire to it.
Jen mentioned that they were going a “little extreme” while spraying the envelope. Jimmy Kimmel said they had to be cautious as they did not know where the hands of the accountants have been.
The comedian then told Jen they should wait for five seconds so that the envelope could be properly disinfected. The Morning Show actress then used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
The duo did not anticipate that the envelope would reignite when they held its burned remains with metal tongs. A voice urged from the background to put out the fire as their joke almost boomeranged. Jen had to again use the fire extinguisher onto the flames.
The Friends alum was also nominated at this year’s Emmys. However, she faced strong competition from other nominees such as Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Olivia Coleman (The Crown), Zendaya (Euphoria), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), and Laura Linney (Ozark). It was Zendaya who ultimately won the prestigious award this year, The New York Times reports.
The show with the maximum number of nominations has been HBO’s Watchmen with 26 of them. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel bagged 20 nominations this year.
Both Succession and Ozark have bagged 18 nominations at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards each.
Many of the cast members of the series Succession were nominated for the first time including Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfadyen, Harriet Walter, Kiernan Culkin, and Nicholas Braun, Mirror.co.uk reports.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston recently appeared for an online table read session of Fast Times at Ridgemont High with her former husband Brad Pitt with many other stars.
