Prince George's Godfather Hugh Grosvenor has donated $12.5 million to his country's coronavirus relief efforts. This donation will come in handy for funding multiple initiatives such as supporting NHS workers and their families and carrying out COVID-19 related medical research.
Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster is leaving no stone unturned in an attempt to support those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Touted as one of Britain's richest people, Grosvenor handed out £10 million, which roughly converts to about $12.5 million to national COVID-19 relief efforts.
Before giving this gift, Grosvenor donated £2.5 million (about $3.1 million) in March. This money will be used to aid multiple initiatives in the United Kingdom such as medical research related to COVID-19, helping NHS workers and their families, and supporting charities that offer food to those in need, and also support people who are likely to experience the economic impacts of the pandemic for a longer period.
Grosvenor expressed gratitude on behalf of his family and everyone at the Grosvenor Estate to the NHS staff and people that are providing critical frontline services. In a statement, the British aristocrat said they were grateful that the NHS staff and other essential workers are working hard to make sure everyone is safe and the country continues functioning.
Aside from that, the Duke summarized some of the initiatives that his donation will fund. Currently, on lockdown, the U.K. has been hit hard by the crisis. At the time of writing, 98,476 people had tested positive, with 12,868 succumbing to coronavirus. After Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor died due to a heart attack in 2016, Grosvenor became one of the world's youngest billionaires as he inherited his family's fortune.
Towards the end of 2019, the Sunday Times estimated his family's worth around a whopping £10.1 billion (about $12,750,000), the majority of which comes from hundreds of acres of property they have in London. The Duke is one of Prince George's seven godparents, along with the likes of Oliver Baker, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, Will's cousin Zara Tindall, William van Cutsem and Grosvenor.
Prince Charles's godson, Hugh Grosvenor was also spotted at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in May 2018. With a net worth of about $12.7 billion, Bloomberg ranked him at no. 102 on its Billionaires Index. Moreover, his family owns one of the world's largest real estate companies and has some of London's most expensive and exclusive properties.
