Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially followed in Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s footsteps by inking a deal with Netflix.
And just like the Obamas, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s projects will be focused on promoting the causes that are close to their hearts.
According to Daily Mail journalist Tom Leonard, the Sussexes’ deal with Netflix is so like the Obamas’ deal from two years ago. In fact, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos’ statement about the two deals sounded highly similar.
“Mr. Sarandos yesterday gushed that he was 'incredibly proud that they have chosen to make Netflix their home' – almost word for word what he said of the Obamas when he bought a share in their international super-celebrity in 2018,” Leonard said.
Months ago, the Obamas also denied ever giving Prince Harry and Markle advice on what could do after they quit the royal family. But their recent deal with Netflix seemingly suggests that they could’ve been in talks with the former first couple.
“The Obamas have previously denied giving advice to their friends the Sussexes. But it is not impossible that the former president and first lady would have given them some pointers on how to 'monetize their brand' with projects that won't antagonize their fans by appearing too commercial,” Leonard said.
While there is still no confirmation as to how much the Sussexes will be receiving with their multiyear deal with Netflix, there are claims that they won’t be getting anything less than $100 million.
According to Express, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex quietly shopped TV projects for Disney and Apple throughout the summer. And the two executives involved in the discussions claimed that the couple’s representative sought a deal that’s not less than $100 million.
Before Prince Harry and Markle’s Netflix deal was confirmed, there were rumors that the Duchess of Sussex could return to Suits. A source recently told New Idea that Markle’s return to the TV series would instantly make it one of the most popular TV shows of today.
However, this is unlikely to happen because Suits was canceled shortly after Markle quit the program. And she decided to do so because she wed Prince Harry and tried her luck at becoming a royal.
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for Markle. And she and Prince Harry quit The Firm in January.
