"This is incredible. I can't believe MTV asked me to host. I don't know if I was their first choice or the only one brave enough to do it during COVID. Either way, I got the job!" Palmer kick-started the show with the joke.
The actress noted that the time has been rough lately. However, there are several moments that helped the new generation to stay motivated and inspired. She acknowledged the heroes who went beyond to ensure that the delivery trucks are working even during the pandemic.
The Akeelah and the Bee star also addressed the people working at the essential stores along with the people serving at the hospital and battling on the front line. The actress didn't miss the opportunity to address the most raged concern, Black Lives Matter.
The BET YoungStars Award winner spoke about the movement that brought the new generation on the streets to help the voices to reach out. She also addressed the incident of Jacob Blake shooting that took place on Aug. 23 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The actress said that this recent event is another traumatic reminder that her generation needs to keep moving ahead with the Black Lives Matter movement. She further said that police brutality or injustice of any kind won't be tolerated anymore.
Palmer encouraged the youth to fight against systemic racism and continue the protest. The star explained that youth needs to change themselves into what they want to see in the future. She said that everyone across the globe needs to work on the movement that will ensure that progress is made.
She also acknowledged that the power of music can help people to get healed. Palmer said that this night is all about love. The opening speech of Palmer was shot on a virtual stage with no live audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides that, Palmer also mentioned the demise of Chadwick Boseman before the performance of The Weeknd and said praised the 43-year-old actor for his work.
