Every family has skeletons in the closet, the British Royal family is one of them. Of the many scandals, the family have endured throughout the years, one of the most heartbreaking was the divorce of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Prince Charles.
Diana came into the royal scene as a shy young woman, married to Prince Charles at a tender 19 years of age, Diana was trying to be mature for her husband and family.
Charles met Diana when he was dating her sister, Lady Sarah. Besotted by her beauty, Prince Charles ended up marrying Diana instead. The royal life was hard for Diana, she sought freedom, locked in into a family of rules and laws at a young age, she sacrificed her life for the royal family.
During there marriage, despite having 2 sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and an almost perfect façade of a family, turmoil was brewing. Prince Charles ignited his affair, with first love, Camilla Parker-Bowles and the hurt Princess Diana started her own affair.
The Queen had to intervene in their marriage and ordered the couple to get a divorce. The divorce was a long one and an intense one. The divorce gave Diana the freedom to travel, but she was still bound to her royal duties, which she did so effortlessly.
But during these times, due to the hyped divorce of the two, relentless paparazzi followed Diana everywhere until her untimely death in Paris one year after her divorce with Charles was finalized.
One of the most heartbreaking news during the divorce that even the Queen was reluctant to agree on was whether Diana was to retain her HRH title.
“What was interesting about the divorce details was that the Queen was actually cool supposedly with letting Diana keep the HRH title. But Charles was adamant that she gives it up. I thought that was really interesting because no HRH title meant hse would have to curtsy to her ex-husband and also her children”, Royal commenter Roberta Fiorito said.
Apart from Diana’s HRH title being taken away from her, she also lost a large amount for travel budget and police protection.
Because of her limited resources after the divorce, she was not able to continue supporting many of the charities and organizations she was involved in.
Princess Diana was given $20 million during the divorce and $500,000 in allowance per year, her untimely death was one of the most unfortunate events in recent history.
