There is no denying that Altered Carbon Season 3 is among the much-awaited series today. Though there have been no concrete details about the third installment of the American cyberpunk web television series, showrunner Alison Schapker shared several ideas up her sleeve earlier this year.
Schapker told The Hollywood Reporter, in March, that she was “dying” for Altered Carbon Season 3 since she has a ton of ideas for directions and possible storylines to explore. Though she did not share any other information at the time, the showrunner assured fans that they were ready to go.
"When I came on board, [creator] Laeta Kalogridis was already mapping out season two. The idea was that this was going to be an anthology series but one that also had extensive continuity and rewarded viewers on a season-by-season basis as far as Takeshi Kovacs' journey,” she told the news outlet.
During an interview with IGN, Schapker revealed that the Elders and their technology will remain the focus of the imminent installments, including Altered Carbon Season 3. She, also, told Entertainment Weekly that there are a lot of things to look forward to in the future, especially since Quell’s revolution has yet to be addressed and The Protectorate is still out there. She furthered that the battle needs to continue.
However, just a few months after the interview, Netflix decided not to push through with the highly anticipated Altered Carbon Season 3. Sources told Deadline that the American streaming giant made the heartbreaking decision based on the show’s total viewership versus the cost. The insider made it clear that it has nothing to do with the COVID-19 pandemic.
CarterMatt shared that the series is not cheap to do. The entertainment news outlet stated that the production has to make a high-quality visual display to match its fascinating plot. It added that making sure that everything is in order would take time and might cost a significant amount of money “to make it all happen.”
The publication said it remains “doubtful” if Altered Carbon Season 3 would be aired in another streaming site or television channel. Cartermatt furthered that avid followers of the show would not get another installment until 2022 even if recruiting new cast members would not be that hard.
Fans were quick to react to the news. “Well that's #Netflix for ya, they are only interested in keeping shows that draw in new subscribers. As soon as a show stops doing that..it's done. They could care less about how popular a show is if it's not bringing new money it gets the ax,” one netizen wrote on Twitter. “that's because season 2 was garbage. they shouldn't have changed who was playing the main character,” Jesse O’Malley said.
