Meghan Markle, allegedly, quit the royal family to outshine Princess Diana. However, the reaction she and Prince Harry got was far from what the Princess of Wales received.
In an article for Woman UK, royal author Lady Colin Campbell said that Markle has always been fascinated with Princess Diana. And following her divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana received even greater support from royal fans.
As such, Markle must have thought that quitting The Firm will endear her to her supporters and even her critics. However, this isn’t what happened.
“I believe that Meghan’s ambition was always to outshine Diana; there are many parallels. But I think she’s gravely misread the situation,” Campbell said.
The royal author said that there are many parallels between the two women other than their charity work and the causes that are close to their hearts.
Two years ago, the Suits alum also gushed over the late royal while talking about the engagement ring that Prince Harry gave to her.
“Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of that and not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us,” she said.
However, it is, reportedly, unclear if this was just a coincidence, a form of flattery in the form of imitation, or a deliberate attempt to outshine Prince Harry’s mom.
Meanwhile, royal author Victoria Murphy talked about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Megxit by saying that they didn’t quit in search of private life. Rather, Prince Harry and Markle were simply looking for a different kind of public life.
“A public life where they can have more control over who gets access to them and what they spend their time on,” she said.
Campbell added that Markle’s desire to turn her and Prince Harry into a power couple could be backfiring.
“She thought sheer hype would get her into LA, where she could become the great star she always wanted to be. But I don’t think it will happen for her,” she said.
Campbell has been an outspoken critic of Markle. She previously called the Duchess of Sussex “cheap,” “vulgar,” and “irresponsible” for behaving like a celebrity.
The royal author also said that if Princess Diana was alive, she would’ve clashed with Markle.
