Meghan Markle has confirmed her decision to participate in the upcoming presidential elections in the United States in November.
As an American and a non-royal, Markle has decided to exercise her right to vote. While speaking with Marie Claire, the Duchess of Sussex said that she knows what it’s like to have a voice and to be voiceless.
“I know what it’s like to have a voice, and also what it’s like to feel voiceless. I also know that so many men and women have put their lives on the line for us to be heard. And that opportunity, that fundamental right, is in our ability to exercise our right to vote and to make all our voices heard,” she said.
Markle also explained why she has decided to vote and said that she was inspired by one of Kate Sheppard’s quotes about voting.
“Do not think your single vote does not matter much. The rain that refreshes the parched ground is made up of single drops,’” the quote read.
According to New Idea, Markle’s decision to vote in the presidential elections may ruffle some feathers in the royal family. After all, the members of the British clan tend to stay politically neutral.
When Markle joined the royal family in 2017, one of the rules that she had to follow was to never share her thoughts on opinions on politics. But now that she’s no longer a member of the royal family, she has decided to exercise her vote.
It is also unlikely for Markle’s decision to cast a vote in the upcoming elections to ruffle feathers. After all, voting is one of her rights as an American citizen. And since she’s no longer a senior working royal, she doesn’t need to follow the rules and protocols of the palace.
As of late, it is still unclear who Markle will vote for in the elections. However, it is guaranteed that she won’t vote for Donald Trump.
Years ago, the Suits alum called the POTUS misogynistic. She also slammed the president for being divisive.
Shortly after the interview, reports swirled that Trump was offended by Markle’s statements that he called her nasty. However, the POTUS denied saying this.
“I never called Meghan Markle ‘nasty.’ Made up by Fake News Media, and they got caught cold,” he said.
