One Day at a Time cast reunited again! The cast recalled the tribute hidden in the show, which viewers might have missed in the reboot.
In series One Day at a Time, Bonnie Franklin portrayed Ann Romano's character in 1975. At that time, it was a unique experience for audiences to experience the portrayal of a single mother on television. However, Norman Lear took the risk of writing this character that eventually became a huge success.
Lear didn't only create a successful sitcom that aired on CBS but also witness the series to go on till 1984, it completed nine seasons. The 98-year-old writer reunited with the entire cast of the show such as Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli, Michael Lembeck, and Glenn Scarpelli.
The reunion was also attended virtually by producer Patricia Fass Palmer. The producer of the original sitcom spoke about the legacy and the reboot episode that happened through the Stars in the House series on YouTube.
Palmer is the only connection between the original series that aired in 1975 and the reboot version that starred Isabella Gomez, Rita Moreno, Marcel Ruiz, and Justina Machado in 2017. The stars revealed that there is an Easter egg on the rebooted version that paid a tribute to the original One Day at a Time.
Franklin and Palmer shared a long-term friendship due to which the producer decided to pay a tribute to her family after her demise. The producer recalled how obsessed Franklin was to collect dolls with red-head and those dolls used to be everywhere in the house.
"Her sisters gave that piece of pottery to me after she passed away. She sits upstage in the new show, and she watches over all of us," Palmer revealed during the reunion.
Phillips immediately recalled Franklin's name as soon as she saw the doll. The actress portrayed Julie Cooper's character on the original show. She revealed that the original idea was to show only one daughter with a single mother but later they added one more daughter.
The 60-year-old actress said that she remembered during the pilot discussion where Bonnie Franklin's character daughter was supposed to portrayed by only Phillips. In fact, the actress stressed over the YouTube video that is available as proof.
However, Phillips admitted not being able to recall the title of the video. Although she asked the producer to jump in and support her on this. Phillips jokingly said that the network didn't like the first daughter and that's when Bertinelli was introduced to the series.
