Dave Franco is best known for his comedy work such as Neighbors and The Disaster Artist. When Franco decided to direct a horror movie, he surprised the fans. The actor acknowledged and said that as an audience he loves smart movies.
In an interview with ET's Rachel Smith, the 35-year-old actor revealed that thriller and horror genre movies such as Hereditary and Get Out are all about atmospheric and nuanced. Such movies tend to creep you out but it takes time.
However, The Rental which is the horror movie directed by the actor is about couples who wanted to spend the weekend outside the coast. The actor revealed that the entire concept of the movie is based on his own feelings of being paranoid.
Both the couples figure out that the host of the place is spying. Franco shared a valid point that nobody trusts each other in the country and everyone seems to be divided. However, based on a few online reviews that sound positive, people trust staying at someone else property.
Sheila Vand and Allen White are roped in to play one couple while another couple is portrayed by Dan Stevens and Franco's wife Alison Brie. The young actor turned director joked and said that this casting shows that their relationship is extremely comfortable.
Franco further said that he is absolutely fine with his wife romancing on-screen an immensely good looking actor. He praised Brie's acting skills and said that makes his job a lot easier. The 37-year-old actress would simply exceed her performance in every take.
Moreover, Fanco is glad to have his wife as a cast member because that allows him to spend more time with her. “As a first-time director, there were moments where I would get in my head and start to doubt myself and she was there to build me up in the right way and remind me that we were doing good work," Franco added.
The horror movie is shot in Oregon on the West Coast part where they shared a property to shoot. The director jokingly said that we stay in stranger's property thinking that nothing is ever going to turn bad.
However, the shoot was safe as the Airbnb ensured quarantining preparation for both the couples. After the collaboration turns out to be good for the couple, they are looking forward to writing another script. Once the horror genre is covered, the couple wants to takeover rom-com.
