According to Hollywood Reporter, the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ video game is a release from 1985 for Nintendo NES consoles.
The price of the auctioned ‘Super Mario Bros.’ video game sets Heritage Auction’s new price record for the same video game. In 2019, the same version of the video game was auctioned at $100,150, who the seller at that time, told Ars Technica that putting the video game on auction is “probably” a wrong move” in long term selling.
Meanwhile, the titlist of the most priced video game in the Guinness Book of World Records list is the video game collection being sold in 2014 for $750,000. The collections consist of more than 11,000 video games, including an estimated 8,300 unopened video games.
According to Heritage Auctions Video Game Specialist and Consignment Director Valerie McLeckie, it is the dated 1987 “3-code variant” of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ video game makes it very rare and antique, comparing to the earlier (1985 to early 1986) version of the video game. McLeckie also added that the small round Nintendo sticker seal and the cardboard hangtab inside the shrink wrap adds up to the video game’s rarity – coming up in a pricy amount of $114,000.
In an article by Ars Technica, the vintage copy of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ video game “came from outside the collecting hobby.” McLeckie also said the she highly suspects that the video game was factiously bought in 1987 and was misplaced then forgotten. The person behind the auction remains to be unnamed and whose identity is highly safeguarded by Heritage Auctions.
The one of a kind copy of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ game was already sold to different buyers at $700,00, making the sale a unsuccessful one. Moreover, before the price of the said video game was set, Heritage Auctions eyes the dollar amount of no more $500,000.
Other vintage copies of video games that was auction and sold are a sealed copy for Nintendo consoles of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out for over $50,000 and Play Station 2 console for God of War sold at $2,640 price.
