Conan O'Brien has many writers on his show who have a separate fan following on social media. One of them is Laurie Kilmartin who opened up on Conan in an interview after her mother passed away due to COVID-19. She documented her mother's last moments in several tweets in her comic style.
The 54-year-old writer told the TBS late-night show host how her mother got infected with the virus in the first place. Kilmartin explained that her mother was shifted to a nursing facility after she was tested negative in the hospital. However, it was the nursing facility where she got contracted by the coronavirus.
Kilmartin disclosed that similar to other comics, she is also unable to sit with a feeling for a long period of time, and to get over it she decided to write jokes about it. She revealed that it wasn't the first time when she used comedy as a coping mechanism.
When Kilmartin lost her father due to lung cancer, she wrote a bunch of jokes on Twitter. Kilmartin found her mother's illness a great way to educate her fans and followers about the realities of this surreal and strange ongoing pandemic.
Considering her mother's death related to COVID-19, she shared some tweets that displayed her soreness and sense of humor at the same time. The Dead People Suck: A Guide for Survivors of the Newly Departed writer told that she gave that nursing facility a low Yelp review and also made fun of her mother's political choices.
O'Brien asked Kilmartin about losing a family member to this disease and comparing the death of her father and mother to which the writer replied, "awful". She told the 57-year-old host that she wasn't able to talk immediately after this tragedy.
Kilmartin further explained how her mother was kept in the isolation, "She was alone in a room; the people who came in to take care of her were dressed head-to-toe in plastic." Kilmartin said that she and her sister continuously watched their mother suffering COVID and with the help of an iPad they use to share their daily routine such as getting a puppy, cooking, and so on.
However, Kilmartin spoke about the message which was out regarding pandemic. She told that everyone made a huge mistake to ask people to wear a mask because it is going to protect others. Instead, she suggested that because of Americans' selfish nature, the mask should be worn to protect your own life.
