Stargirl and the Jusice Society of America squad will pick up the threads of their superhero mission on the show’s second season renewal. And yes, the rumor is true; Stargirl’s second season will only be aired on its broadcast network, The CW.
Stargirl debuted on May 18, 2020 in DC Universe and on The CW the following day – DC’s comic book streaming partner.
The comic-inspired superhero series is still on its season mid-air when the show’s producer Greg Berlanti announced its forthcoming second season; with no exact date of premier. This time, The CW channel will be the show’s dedicated in-season home.
As per HollywoodReporter, Stargirl has “performed solidly” with its viewer ratings. Three days after, the superhero drama earned a 0.4 rating on its average 1.55 million viewers, ranging from adults ages 18-49. Like many other streamers, DCU never released viewership figures, but since the show topped the channel’s charts, praising the over-all team won’t hurt.
As of this writing, Stargirl has now an average 0.2 rating in adults ages 18-49 and over a million views per episode, based on the Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings chart. Other DC Universe shows are also on the same league as Stargirl, Variety reported.
Following the legacy of THE CW hit-series ‘Smallville’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, the superhero teen drama Stargirl revolves around a simple high school student, Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), who became Stargirl after coming across the late JSA member Starman’s mantle. The plot continued as Courtney brought back to life the JSA to her classmates’ identity: Rick Tyler (Cameron Gallman) as Hourman, Yolanda Montez (Yvette Monreal) as Wildcat, and Beth Chapel (Anjelika Washington) as Doctor Mid-Nite. The newly appointed Justice Society of America squad faces a group of supervillains residing in Blue Valley, Nebraska who call themselves as the Injustice Society of America. Stargirl and her super team are fully supported by her step-father Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), who owns a gigantic robot.
The creator of the comic book series, Geoff Johns, also serves as the show’s co-showrunner and executive producer, alongside Melissa Carter. Berlanti Productions Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter works with the show’s production as executive producers. Stargirl the series is a Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions produced show in association with Warner Bros. Television. As per Variety, Johns based the show’s characters to her sister, who he aims to pay tribute through the show.
Even with the show leaving DC Universe as its in-season’s home for Season 2, The CW has announced DC’s “Swamp Thing” to be aired in fall season – which was canceled from its in-season home streamer after season one.
Meanwhile, other DCU series can be streamed on other channels, such as “Doom Patrol” which recently premiered on both DCU and HBO Max. Another one is DCU female empowerment series “Harley Quinn” which will be made available on HBO Max as well.
