Rapper Kanye West declares on Twitter his big decision in running for the presidential position to the upcoming 2020 elections. His announcement was then questioned by many and as The Guardian wrote in one of their articles, “2020 couldn’t get any weirder”.
“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” the rapper wrote. “I am running for president of the United States.”
The proclaimed Trump supporter announced his candidacy on the American Independence Day (July 4), which came a surprise to some that led in stimulating a social media commotion. The tweet also comes with the hashtag #2020VISION.
West’s spouse, Kim Kardashian, retweeted her husband’s statement and quoted the American flag. The said retweet caught entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s attention who commented and promised his full support. According to Politico, Musk is a former supporter of the Democratic candidate Andrew Yang.
However, many are baffled about the rapper’s announcement, concluding it as a publicity stunt. Politico then questioned the rapper’s authenticity: Why the sudden change of the rapper’s mind from being a supporter of President Donald Trump to declaring opposition against him? Is this a propaganda to encourage Black voters away from the speculated Democratic candidate Joe Biden?
Per BBC, the rapper’s name is unregistered under the Federal Election Commission for the 2020 November elections. The database only shows results for candidate “Kayne Deez Nutz West” under the umbrella of the Green Party in 2015, and have raised no money at the moment.
In 2015, Kanye West first announced his presidential candidacy for the 2020 elections at the MTV Music Video Music Awards. But just November of last year, the rapper then unbacked his decision by postponing his candidacy to 2024.
Since West’s tweet doesn’t declare his party, his candidacy will be at a zero visible probability, according to BBC. With the 2020 elections happening in four months, the rapper needs to collect a definite number of signatures and register it to the states following a deadline: some states are already way pass the deadline.
Surely then, without the further details of Kanye West candidacy, the 2020 elections are more likely to be a battle between Democrat Joe Biden and current U.S. President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, the rapper’s newest album was released just last week entitled “God’s Country” having “Wash Us in the Blood” as its first single. Aside from the album, West also signed a 10-year contract with Gap Inc. which made the brand’s sale increase at 42 percent. And just days later, West’s wife, Kim, the owner of Max Factor and Covergirl, sold 20 percent of the brand’s products, making her business value now at $1 billion.
