Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart dated July 4 has The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” return to the no. 1 spot. The hit-song has now over 160 mainstreams on 40 radio stations, as Billboard reported.
“Blinding Lights” carry out as The Weeknd’s second single for his fourth 2020 released studio album, “After Hours”. The song was launched on November 29, 2019 following the release of “Heartless”. The Canadian singer wrote and produced the song with producers Max Martin and Oscar Hotler, with Belly and Jason Quenneville, who received additional writing credits. Few months have passed, The Weeknd surprisingly dropped a Chromatics remix of “Blinding Lights” on March 23, 2020 alongside the deluxe edition of the album.
The Weeknd’s hit song is a XO/Republic produced record, that now holds the record of the third-longest rule on the charts, covering 12 weeks in total; holding the same title with the song “Truly Madly Deeply”. The hit-song comes after Post Malone’s “Circles” who sits on the charts for 15 weeks.
The Weeknd’s hit-song has been battling in the charts against Justin Bieber’s “Intentions” (feat. Quavo), Camilla Cabello’s “My Oh My” (feat. DaBaby), and Doja Cat’s “Say So”.
“Blinding Lights” also took the no. 1 spots in different song charts globally; in Canada, the song became The Weeknd’s fifth number one single on the Canadian Hot 100 and Billboard Hot 100 for four and seven weeks; in Germany, The Weeknd stormed his first no. 1 spot for ten weeks; in the U.K. for eight weeks; and in Australia for eleven weeks.
“Blinding Lights” was first appeared on a Mercedes-Benz TV commercial the same day it was released showing a clip of the song. The Weeknd can be seen driving a Mercedes-Benz EQC SUV asking the car’s system to play his new song. The Canadian singer then took social media few days after the commercial to announce his music comeback with a very hinting caption.
The song’s message is somehow relatable to the singer’s on-off relationship with model Bella Hadid. The lyrics sings about how important his partner is to him and the power of reconciliation.
Due to the song’s unique vibe, it has received a number of praises globally, including 32nd Best Song of 2019 by Stereogum, Best Song of 2020 (so far) by Billboard and Consequence of Sound, and with lots of commendation from different song reviewers and producers.
