Brad Pitt didn't make it to the 73rd British Academy Film and Television Arts Awards due to family obligations, but he made sure his presence would be felt. In a speech letter read by his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood co-star Margot Robbie, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell victims of his double-meaning speeches in front of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
It was unfortunate for the Birds of Prey star to read a speech about the Sussexes' controversial Megxit in front of their royal relatives, the Cambridges. However, the 29-year-old Australian actress managed to take it in stride, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
According to Elle, Brad Pitt first made a reference to another hot topic of today, the Brexit. He likened it to his love and divorce from Angelia Jolie, saying it is now single and welcoming it to the club, wishing it the "best for the divorce settlement."
He then thanked the Academy for the extreme honor. He admitted he was a bit intimidated to receive the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and "the titans that have come before" it. He made sure to save the best for last when Margot Robbie finished the speech with a joke about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
"He's gonna name this [BAFTA] Harry because he's excited about bringing it back to the States with him," he said. As Margot Robbie said it in front of Prince William and Kate Middleton, she made it clear that it was Brad Pitt's words and not hers.
The camera then quickly panned to the future king and queen consort. Just like Margot Robbie, Prince William and Kate Middleton just took in the stride and laughed.
According to E! News, it wasn't the first time that Brad Pitt killed it with his acceptance speech. At the 2020 Golden Globes, he said that he wanted to bring his mom as his date, but he simply couldn't as any woman he stood next to would become the lady that he was dating. "It would just be awkward," he added.
He also made fun of his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood co-star Leonardo DiCaprio when he made a reference to his iconic film Titanic. When he accepted his award, he thanked his "partner in crime, LDC," for he wouldn't be there without him, adding he would have "shared the raft" with him.
