Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Victoria Monét has officially addressed her split from John Gaines, revealing that the couple parted ways nearly 10 months ago. In a candid post shared on her social media on September 23, Monét explained that while they had been “avoiding a formal statement” regarding their separation, mounting speculation and “extremely false accusations” about the beginning of their relationship led them to speak out.
Monét, 30, and Gaines, who share a 2-year-old daughter named Hazel, had kept their relationship relatively private over the years, but their recent public statement sheds light on their decision to separate. “We spent the last 10 months trying to respectfully and privately navigate the fact that we are no longer in a relationship. Though we still completely adore and respect each other, we are not a couple anymore,” Monét wrote on Twitter.
One key point Monét made in her message was the clarification that no infidelity had led to the breakup. Rather, the couple decided to amicably part ways while remaining focused on raising their daughter. "We still think the world of each other and operate with love in every interaction for our family. We have an incredible daughter to raise for life and that is undoubtedly our number 1 priority forever," she said.
The singer also touched on the importance of creating a peaceful and supportive environment for their child, emphasizing that no change in their relationship status could diminish their commitment to co-parenting. “No relationship status can remove or replace that fact,” Monét continued. “We are committed to doing the inner work and trust that God will place us both where we belong in due time.”
Monét went on to express gratitude for the support of family, friends, and fans during this difficult time, asking for privacy as they continue to navigate co-parenting. “Please allow us the peace and space to maintain a safe and happy environment to continue to co-parent to the best of our ability for Hazel! We plan to remain a family regardless of our public-facing title,” she added.
The couple’s decision to split comes as a surprise to some, as they were last seen making a public appearance together at the 2024 Grammy Awards, walking the red carpet with their daughter Hazel. Monét and Gaines had been romantically linked since 2020, with Gaines even starring in the music video for Monét’s song “Moment” that same year. The couple announced that they were expecting their first child in December 2020, and Hazel was born soon after.
At one point, marriage had been on the horizon for the couple. In a 2021 interview with Essence, Monét had shared that marriage was “the plan, for sure,” adding that the couple was “completely in love” and excited about the new chapter of parenthood. “Hazel’s really got him wrapped around her finger, and I’ve seen him change in ways that I know he didn’t expect. She’s growing us up,” Monét said at the time.
Despite the end of their romantic relationship, Monét and Gaines have made it clear that their focus remains on their daughter. “We appreciate you all for hearing us out and hope to be kept in your well-intentioned prayers,” Monét concluded in her statement, underscoring the duo’s commitment to a harmonious co-parenting relationship for Hazel’s well-being.
Monét, who has built a successful career as a singer-songwriter, continues to focus on her music. Known for her songwriting contributions to hits like Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” and her solo work, including the critically acclaimed Jaguar album, Monét remains a prominent figure in the R&B and pop music world.
