"American Idol" is in for a change as Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran join the panel while Katy Perry and Lionel Richie perform at King Charles' coronation concert in London. The remaining contestants were thrilled to learn about the new additions on Monday night's episode.
In a group interview after the show, judge Luke Bryan expressed his excitement, saying, "When we're up there, we're speaking from the heart. And Alanis and Ed, they'll do that also." He went on to discuss the fresh dynamic that the new judges would bring, as he wouldn't be able to predict their opinions like he can with Perry and Richie.
Katy Perry shared her enthusiasm about Morissette and Sheeran taking their places on the judging panel. "I idolize Alanis, Jagged Little Pill is the reason I do music," the 38-year-old singer said. "Ed Sheeran is the best producer, writer, artist, life-liver." She added, "These are two people who always stay true to themselves and are real, so I think it's awesome to have them as judges."
In addition to being a judge, Morissette, 48, will also mentor the contestants, who will perform her songs on the show. Meanwhile, the finalists will perform duets of Sheeran's hits.
Both guest judges are set to showcase their talents, with Morissette performing one of her hits and Sheeran, 32, presenting his brand-new single to Idol viewers.
While Perry and Richie attend the royal event, they will check in with "American Idol" live from Windsor Castle, possibly "having tea," as Perry teased.
The remaining seven finalists—Oliver Steele, Colin Stough, Megan Danielle, Iam Tongi, Warren Peay, Wé Ani, Zacharia Smith, and Haven Madison—are excited to work with the iconic artists. Steele shared, "The first song I ever learned how to play on acoustic guitar was 'The A Team.' I had his [Sheeran's] poster on my wall in high school. He is one of four of the most important artists who impacted my life."
Tune in to the next episode of "American Idol" on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
