Rupert Murdoch, the 92-year-old media magnate, and Ann Lesley Smith, 66, have decided to end their engagement, according to a source close to Murdoch who confirmed the news, PEOPLE reported.
The announcement comes just a fortnight after the billionaire revealed his engagement to one of his own newspapers, The New York Post, with plans for a late summer wedding.
Vanity Fair was the first to report the news of their terminated engagement. A source close to Murdoch told the publication that he had become uneasy with Smith's evangelical beliefs.
Murdoch proposed to the former police chaplain in New York City on St. Patrick's Day, following his divorce from his fourth wife, supermodel Jerry Hall, last year.
Upon announcing the engagement in March, Murdoch admitted he "was very nervous."
"I dreaded falling in love — but I knew this would be my last," he shared with the outlet. "It better be. I'm happy."
"We're both looking forward to spending the second half of our lives together," the billionaire added.
Murdoch, whose empire comprises Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and numerous other media assets worldwide, met Smith in September 2022, just a month after finalizing his most recent divorce.
"Last year when there were 200 people at my vineyard, I met her and we talked a bit," he told The New York Post. "Two weeks later, I called her."
Smith, who was previously married to late country singer and executive Chester Smith, said that "friends are happy for me."
"I'm a widow for 14 years. Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman," she revealed to the outlet. "In perspective, it's not my first rodeo. Getting near 70 means being in the last half. I waited for the right time."
According to the Modesto Bee, Smith had one previous marriage before marrying her late husband.
The Australian-born billionaire has been married four times, with each marriage producing a total of six children. The Australian-born billionaire first married Patricia Booker in 1956, and they divorced in 1967. That same year, he married his second wife, Anna Maria Torv.
Murdoch and Torv divorced in 1999, and he married his third wife, Wendi Deng, that same year. They parted ways in 2013. The three marriages resulted in six children. Murdoch and Hall tied the knot in a civil ceremony at Spencer House in London in 2016 and were married for six years.
