The fear, anger, and outrage brought about by the killing of George Floyd aren’t just confined in the United States. Even in other places in the world, Black people have spoken up about how the killing affects them, with the most recent voice being television presenter Alison Hammond.
Metro reports on the emotional speech that Hammond delivered on This Morning, saying that Hammond began her plea by noting that she is the son of a 15-year-old. Hammond says seeing the footage of Floyd being killed by the police officer left her “disgusted.”
Hammond says it was not just George Floyd that she saw in the video, but it was also her son, her father, and her brothers. She expressed disgust that something like this was still happening in 2020 and at how long it has been going on.
That said, Hammond also expressed appreciation for the diversity of people that have joined the protests against the killing of George Floyd. As Digital Spy reports, Hammond said that she can see that her “white [and] Asian brothers and sisters” are beginning to understand the plight of Black people as she sees them participate in the protests.
Expressing similar positivity at the diversity of the protesters was iconic filmmaker Spike Lee, who recently spoke out about the George Floyd protests. According to Lee, it was encouraging to see the different races taking part in the protests, something that he has not seen since he was a young child during the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
One such white person that definitely gained an understanding of what it is that Black people have to go through is the musician Halsey. The 25-year-old took part in the George Floyd protests held over the weekend in Los Angeles and she recounted the experience in a series of tweets.
According to her, it was difficult to talk about all of the “horrors” that she encountered during her time in the protests. The singer says there was a shortage of medics to handle the blood and wounds that protesters suffered from the rubber bullets fired by the police. She even admits that she had to treat those wounds even if she was not qualified to do so because there was no one around to do it.
Halsey was not the only celebrity to take part in the nationwide protest actions. Just some of the celebrities seen at protests include Tessa Thompson, Paris Jackson, Ariana Grande, Timothee Chalamet, Tinashe, Miguel, Kehlani, Cole Sprouse, Machine Gun Kelly, and Emily Ratajkowski.
