Prince William and Kate Middleton surprised royal fans earlier this month when they engaged in a rare PDA. The gestures weren’t unusual for other non-royal couples but since the Cambridges do not normally show their affection towards each other in public, they both made headlines following the outing.
Now, royal commentator Duncan Larcombe spoke with Closer UK to explain why he thinks Prince William and Middleton have become more open when it comes to expressing their love for each other.
“The royal family is changing at breakneck speed after a period of tremendous uncertainty. They’ve weathered the storm with Harry and Meghan’s departure and now the change over from the queen’s reign to that of Prince Charles is already underway. And in turn, William and Kate have also been thrust forward and are making an effort to embrace their new popularity and to own it in their way,” Larcombe said.
Larcombe also pointed out the fact that more and more people have grown to love Middleton and her relationship with Prince William. In the past, the couple's relationship was all about the future king. But over time, Middleton found herself at the center of it all.
The royal commentator added that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's PDAs show that they are modernizing the monarchy. And that the couple wants to let royal fans into their private lives.
"We have seen more displays of affection in the last year than in the last 10 years put together, especially if you include the affectionate family moments we’ve been let in on too. It's all part of the same love story,” he said.
Following their outing, Prince William and Middleton’s PDA was compared with the public displays of affection between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. A body language expert claimed that the Sussexes are more affectionate towards each other because they are not bound by strict royal rules.
It is also important to note that Prince Harry and Markle are not the future king and queen consort of Britain. So, there’s less pressure on their parts to look more serious and less affectionate.
Additionally, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s PDA happened at Prince William’s polo match. And they were obviously ecstatic after the second in line to the throne’s team won.
