All of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s grandchildren are styled as princes or princesses except for Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn.
Since Prince Edward was granted the Earl of Wessex title after his wedding to Sophie, Countess of Wessex, their children were styled following his title.
But according to royal historian Marlene Koenig, the queen’s two youngest grandchildren are technically princess and prince since their dad is also a prince.
“Prince Edward's children are technically Princess Louise and Prince James but are not styled as such. This was made clear on the day of Edward‘s wedding that his children would have the style and title of children of an Earl even though they are grandchildren [of the Sovereign] in the male line,” she told Express.
But according to the Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917, Lady Louis was eligible to be styled a princess. After all, she is the grandchild of the monarch through the male line.
So, if Lady Louise used the title of princess, she would’ve been formally styled as Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex.
Even Lady Louise’s cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie use their princess titles even if they are not senior working members of the royal family.
But it seems the lack of princess and prince in their names is not a problem among the royal siblings. After all, Sophie, Countess of Wessex previously predicted that her children wouldn’t also work as senior royals when they become adults.
“We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living. Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it's highly unlikely,” she told The Sunday Times.
Sophie also said that she doesn’t want to force her daughter to take on her royal duties but if she wants to, she would support her.
The doting mom also revealed that her children have fairly normal lives.
“They go to a regular school [they both attend top independent schools]. They go to friends for sleepovers and parties. At weekends we do lots of dog walking and stay with friends. I guess not everyone's grandparents live in a castle, but where you are going is not the important part, or who they are. When they are with the Queen, she is their grandmother,” she said.
