The legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continues to develop. As this goes, so is the petition to drop the actress from “Aquaman 2.”
Entertainment Times noticed that the apparent petition on Change.org has now amassed more than 2.4 million signatures. It was created in 2020 by Jeanne Larson, who notes in the description to “do the right thing” and “remove Amber Heard from ‘Aquaman 2.’”
The said campaign reportedly aims to obtain 3 million signatures in hopes of preventing the “Paranoia” actress from reprising her role as Princess Mera in the upcoming DCEU film. But, as pointed out by reports, the James Wan superhero sequel already wrapped shooting earlier in January.
Following the latest feat of the petition, several netizens shared their thoughts about the matter on a Reddit thread. Some individuals shared that they intend to boycott “Aquaman 2” if Amber Heard would still be in it.
Others argued, however, that a “massive boycott” seems unlikely as the franchise does not reportedly have a cult following. Even so, should Johnny Depp’s former wife reprise her role, they believe it would “hurt the box office significantly.”
Meanwhile, there are some Redditors who seemingly joked about replacing Heard with Depp in the movie. Few people chimed in and stated that they would love to see the latter in “Aquaman 2,” adding that a cameo would be “awesome.”
Amber Heard nor Johnny Depp have yet to make any comment regarding the petition. But, the “Syrup” actress had initially dismissed it as a “paper tiger,” according to a separate report from the New York Post.
The 32-year-old celebrity broke her silence regarding those individuals who were calling for her firing. She reportedly said she intends to work on the film.
Heard, also, stated that “paid rumors and paid campaigns on social media do not dictate [casting decisions].” She consequently explained that this is because such moves “have no basis in reality.
The actress continued that “only the fans actually made ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Aquaman 2’ happen,” adding that she was “excited to get started” with the filming and shooting.
To date, Amber Heard remains to be part of the cast of the superhero sequel. It is said to be set for a March 2023 release.
The actress and her former husband are currently in an ongoing court battle. Johnny Depp is suing his former wife for defamation after she penned an op-ed placed in the Washington Post back in 2018.
