Ricky Gervais broke his silence about the infamous “slap incident” at the Oscars. This comes after netizens discussed whether it would have happened if the comedian had been in Chris Rock’s place.
New York Post released a report on the matter, detailing what the “After Life” creator had said, per The Mirror. As stated, he shared some of his remarks during a performance in London.
Gervais initially told his audience that he would “get it out of the way,” adding that he does not have any “Will Smith material.” He was referencing what happened at the Oscars last Sunday, when the “King Richard” actor slapped Rock on stage after making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
The “Humanity” stand-up comedian continued that he “trended” on social media when the incident took place despite not being there. He, then, shared what people were saying, including “what would have happened if [he] had been [hosting the Oscars].”
Ricky Gervais said he would do “nothing” before noting that he would “not have made a joke about [Pinkett Smith]’s hair.” He consequently quipped, however, that he would have “made a joke about her boyfriend.”
The publication said that the comedian was likely referencing the Smith couple’s open marriage. Specifically, the “entanglement” that the “Gotham” actress had with R&B artist August Alsina.
The 60-year-old celebrity, did, however, appear to have poked fun at the hair joke following the “slap incident” at the Oscars. On Twitter, he re-shared an old clip from the British “The Office” series, wherein his character made an “alopecia” joke about an employee.
He says, “She’s got alopecia. So, not a happy homelife.”
Apart from retweeting the unearthed clip, Ricky Gervais, also, unveiled what he would have said had he been the host of the ceremony. He stated that he would start with “Hello, I hope this show helps cheer up the ordinary people watching at home.”
The comedian continued, “If you’re unemployed for example, take some comfort in the fact that even if you had a job, your salary probably wouldn’t be as much as the goody bag all the actors have just been given.”
A separate report from New York Post noted that Ricky Gervais appears to be “lampooning” the displays of wealth at the Academy Awards. This came after it was revealed what the “Oscars swag bag” reportedly contains and how much it costs.
Allegedly, the bag is worth $137,000. It has $25,000 in home renovations, $12,000 liposuction operation, as well as a small plot of land in Scotland, alongside the title, “Lord/Lady of Glencoe.”
