Tom Cruise does not fear pulling off death-defying stunts for his films. What reportedly distresses him as of late is that "Mission: Impossible 7" would end up flopping and being a "total box-office bomb" when it hits the big screens.
An insider told Star magazine for its February 28 issue that this all comes after the budget for the movie has already skyrocketed to $290 million. The 59-year-old actor is worrying in secret that the seventh installment of the "M: I" franchise would not recoup the millions.
Cruise is allegedly blaming the pricey production on the "current state of the world" due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The cast and the crew faced numerous lockdowns across the globe, leading to the halting of shooting and filming.
It is unknown whether the actor is, indeed, fearing for the film’s performance at the box office. No one can confirm the story, although multiple sources have been claiming the same narrative.
A different insider spoke with MailOnline, revealing about the “crisis talks” between Tom Cruise and the “Mission: Impossible” bosses. As alleged, “people are starting to sweat on the costs now,” adding that “extra costs are stacking up… and it is starting to get noticed.”
The premiere of the “M: I 7” has shifted from September 2022 to July 2023. Moreover, the bill for excess costs is reportedly in the region of $67 million.
Amid all the talks, the publication noted that it has already reached out to Tom Cruise’s representative for comment. No word has been heard yet from the actor’s camp.
The reports have seemingly taken their grounds on Variety’s print earlier this month. It stated that “Mission: Impossible 7” cost $290 million to produce, leaving Paramount and Skydance Media “shouldering a massive budget and an endless stream of unforeseen expenses.”
In addition, the whopping price tag reportedly includes the “substantial tax incentives” the production was able to leverage to limit the overall costs. It was, also, tens of millions more than what the heads expected going into the production.
Multiple insiders were said to have made the claims to the publication.
Meanwhile, “Mission: Impossible 8” is set to debut in June 2024 instead of July 2023. Reports noted that the postponement of both materials will add “interest costs,” as well, to the total budget.
One informant, then, asserted that the seventh and eighth installments to the franchise are planned to serve as a “sendoff” for Tom Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt. This is why they initially intended to conclude the making of “M: I 8” before the “M: I 7” hits the big screen.
